after-boot video mode changes...

Hello,

Two other lists that I subscribe to instructed me to post this query
with you folks. I've been looking for a utility that would let me change
vga video mode after boot-up, as opposed to using vga=ask in lilo.conf.
I'm wanting to switch back and forth between 132x43 and 80x25, without
having to reboot to do it. I'm told by many that their currently is no
such utility. I suggested I would then write one to which several people
suggested I pass it by you folks first. They seem to think it's not
possible to do this after boot. So... is it true that such a utility
can't be written to work properly on Linux?

Thanks!

Tim
