The old ptys apparently stopped working in 2.1.115. With old,
I mean really old, the ones with major number 4. These were
missing in my nearly-prehistoric Debian/Slackware/homebrew
system. Creating the new (now old) ptys with major 2 and 3
fixed the problem.
