Framebuffer and X

I am having problems with the new kernel framebuffer console and X
windows.
I am using a mostly out of the box RedHat 5.1 system with kernel version
2.1.113.

When I enable the framebuffer console it works fine but I find whenever
I enter X Windows I get a corrupted screen. I am running XF86_SVGA as
the
server and the card is a STB Lightspeed 128 (ET6000). All is not totally
lost as XF68_FBDev server works although it is incredibly slow :-)

Any ideas would be appreciated, even if Im being a moron :-)
