Why not let the driver take care of it? The driver, BTW, knows best...
This is the approach devfs takes.

Hmmm... There's always a way, but DEVFS is very graceful. I respect your
"push it into userland" approach, though. Everybody gets back to
/proc/dev, though, and that is, afterall, what DEVFS IS!!!
