SMP code and uniprocessor

Forgive me if this is an RTFM (which I have), but is it safe yet to
leave the SMP=1 uncommented out when compiling on a uniprocessor
machine?

A few revisions ago (2.1.105 maybe?) I found it very unsafe. I haven't
seen anything mentioned lately about it one way or the other. Anything
definative?
