strange ppp problem in 2.1.x

While running 2.1.x kernels and after pppd has been running for a few
days, i usually get the error shown below, this does not happen to me
when running 2.0.x kernels. Sometimes after this error i cannot reset the
modem using minicom, pppd, etc. and must reboot before it is useable
again. Any suggestions?

note: the connection was not up for a few days but pppd had been running
since system bootup.
