Kerneld may not be needed, but it shouldn't be a problem either. My 2.1.111
kernels are monolithic (no modules) and I leave the have-kernel-autoload-modules
feature disabled. In that context kerneld should have nothing to do.
That said, I'm skeptical that kerneld is a factor in this problem. After all,
my 2.1.111 kernel *with* console support shows no such behavior, yet is booting
the same init scripts. The difference is only whether the output text is
written to the screen or to /etc/mtab.
