I have noticed that someone has patched the drivers/net/3c509.c
file and there is no indication as to who or why.

Would anyone be able to provide any insight into the changes to
drivers/net/3c509.c?

I would like to know before I go in and take the changes out.

The only changes made in 2.1.112 were to bump byte counters in the
per-netdevice statistics structure. This it a totally harmless
change, what made you desire to remove it?
