Clearly NetBIOS and NETBIOS are different though related.

Take a look at the network configuration of a W95 or NT
box if you get the chance. NetBEUI and TCP/IP are listed
as alternatives at the same level. The one does not build
on the other. I have seen many machines with NetBEUI
configured and working and IP not present.

Alan Cox did the work on the now aborted attempt to implement
NetBEUI in the kernel, and says this is not true. I would
tend to believe him, since you don't claim ever to have
worked on NetBEUI.
