Except for some broken old Ethernet cards, your data seems to
indicate that the default NFS block size should vary with the
total amount of memory.

4 MB --> 1 kB
8 MB --> 2 kB
16 MB --> 4 kB
32 MB --> 8 kB

There is a TCP/IP window size CONFIG_* option that might deserve
similar treatment.
