Personally, I never understood why DMA was enabled by default
anyway. As far as I can tell the only sane thing is to have it
always disabled by default, and enable it with hdparm.

True, but still leave this as a compile time option so that other
architectures (where the scope of possible chipsets etc. are known and
well bounded wrt. to quality and reliability when DMA is enabled) can
have it enabled by default if they so wish.
