I've used 2.1.65 or thereaboutts on a 2 mb machine. I did drastically trim
the kernel, .config is just:

CONFIG_MATH_EMULATION=y
CONFIG_MCA=y
CONFIG_BINFMT_ELF=y
CONFIG_M386=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_FD=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_PS2=y
CONFIG_MINIX_FS=y
CONFIG_PROC_FS=y
CONFIG_VT=y
CONFIG_VT_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_SERIAL=y
CONFIG_MOUSE=y
CONFIG_PSMOUSE=y

Worked fine as a smart dumb terminal.
