If I comment out the smp check in apm_bios.c, but do NOT enable any power
saving mode, everything works fine (even switching the machine off via APM).
If I leave it in, the machine oopses when calling any of the apm routines
(since the call pointer is not set up), this happens, for example, with
"halt -p")
The current situation is: linux as is removes the ability to power
the machine off (it oopses), among others.
If I enable apm even on smp, everything works fine. (I hope you don't want
to tell me that "power off" does not work with SMP ;)
So why disable it (at least: why disable it that way?)
