I should also note at this point that these are often poor optimisations since
we may be drawing lines into cache that were not in cache and which were
definitely in cache in the clear inode.
Also 2.0.x has done similar things with file handles. As it happens they all
work out safe but there are bugs caused by this very practice still (fortunately
harmless) in 2.0
