2.0.35 and Cyrix 6x86 autodetection - bug?

Dear Sirs,

I upgraded the Linux kernel on my PC to 2.0.35 recently. The release notes
for 2.0.35 claimed that the Cyrix 6x86 autodetection code was finally
incorporated into the stable kernel. Unfortunately, after compiling and
installing the kernel, it did not recognize my IBM 6x86-PR166+ - it
detected it as an unknown 486, like all previous 2.0.x kernels.

Previously I was able to patch my 2.0.29 kernel with an unofficial Cyrix
patch, and thus it identified the CPU correctly:

asterix# cat /proc/cpuinfo
processor : 0
cpu : 586
model : 6x86
vendor_id : CyrixInstead
stepping : 2.5
fdiv_bug : no
hlt_bug : no
fpu : yes
fpu_exception : yes
cpuid : yes
wp : yes
flags : fpu
bogomips : 98.5

Consulting with other Linuxers using 6x86's nearby, I found that the newer
6x86MX CPUs are identified correctly but some of the old 6x86 CPUs are
not.

I would like to know that anyone else has similar experiences.

Best wishes

Andrew Petry, jr.
