lockup at boot + awk dies at menuconfig

Hi,

trying to compile kernel 2.1.103 (I know the latest is 108)... I upgraded
all the tools (gcc, binutils, libc etc etc) according to the Changes
file... after I compile the kernel (also the modules) and try to boot form
it, it locks up with the CPU register dump after it shows the PCI info
and the IDE controller stats

with same config options it works just fine on 2.1.86

tried with disabling all optimization options as well as experimental
ones

my hardware is a Pentium 200 MMX overclocked to 233, PCI chipset Intel
TX430, with 32M SDRAM

another problem is I can't do make menuconfig. it goes:
Preparing configuration scripts: version, functions, parsing
and then
Awk died with error code 139. Giving up.

seems like gawk dumps core. how do I solve this? I upgraded to awk 3.0.3

thanx in advance
