: I hope some kind soul out there with plenty of time on their hands can
: do the Linux and GNU community out there some good and backport all
: that ugly GNU info documentation back into *roff format as proper
: man pages.

This is a good idea. I suspect it won't happen unless somebody makes a list
of man pages that need work (creation) and posts that on a web page. I'll
volunteer web space on BitMover for this.

: As a gentle compromise (since so few people seem to *know* *roff),

I know *roff (and pic and tbl et al) quite well. And I have full docs,
printed. If you need information, send mail to me, I can do a run of the
docs and mail them out. It's nice having them in printed form on your
desk. The docs I have are 135 pages which cover

Nroff/Troff users manual
A Troff tutorial
PIC users manual
Typing docs on the UNIX systems -ms macros
A guide to preparing docs with -ms macros
A revised version of MS
Writing papers with nroff using -me
-me reference manual
A system for typesetting mathematics (EQN)
TBL - a program to format tables
Some applications of inverted indices on the UNIX Systems
Updating publication lists
Refer
Writing tools - style & diction

Most of these docs are available in their original form on the net. Ralf
has wacked on them to make them print with groff. Eric Raymond has some
PIC docs and I've typed in most of the PIC manual.

What we really ought to do is have a project to make a complete set of
online and printed docs for groff. if you are interested in helping,
let me know. I've set up a "groff@bitmover.com" alias - please join
that (it's a majordomo list) and let's keep this off the kernel alias.

If we get anywhere with the online updated version, I'll take it to Kinkos
and dupliate it and mail it out to anyone that sends me enough to cover the
costs. Ditto for the original ATT versions.
