2940U in Ultra mode: ... timed out - resetting

Hello developer list,

I'm using kernel version 2.1.108 compiled for SMP on a Tyan Tomcat II Dual
Pentium Mainboard. 3 harddiscs, a mo drive and a CD-ROM are connected to an
Adaptec 2940U controller. Everything works great together with Linux when
using normal fast SCSI-II mode and ultra support disabled using the
controllers BIOS setup. No timeouts or other problems on the drives.

But what happens if I enable ultra SCSI support?
The inquiry on startup from the Adaptec BIOS works normal with ultra
support enabled. The Linux kernel is loadad quickly by the controller-BIOS
from the harddisc with ID 0 (a Fujitsu 508 MB drive, not ultra capable).

But Linux won't even start. It will hang after printing "(scsi0:0:-1:-1)
Scanning channel for devices." with a endless loop of messages telling me
"... timed out - resetting", "timed out again - trying harder" and so on.

The SCSI bus is terminated active on both ends and the following devices are
attachted to the controller. IMHO this problem is not hardware related,
perhaps a bug in the SCSI driver, because even inquiry on the first device
(non ultra capable) won't work.

cat /proc/scsi/aic7xxx/0 tells me this version number:
Adaptec AIC7xxx driver version: 5.0.19/3.2.4
Compile Options:
AIC7XXX_RESET_DELAY : 5
AIC7XXX_TAGGED_QUEUEING: Adapter Support Enabled

The following devices are attached:

Thanks a lot for your help
