It did really weird stuff--X would not start, pppd would not start,
rebooting gave me lots of error msgs not captured in logs, including the
help page after complaining that / was illegal.
linux-2.1.107, libc5.4.46, binutils2.9.1.0.6, egcs1.03 486dx2/66
going back to .85 and commenting out kerneld got things going again.
