MAH: I just had a MAJOR accident on my computer, and I absolutely can
MAH: not believe what happened.

MAH: The short story:

MAH: I accidentally pryed the power plug from my main hard disk WHILE
MAH: THE COMPUTER WAS ON AND RUNNING LINUX! I plugged the cable back
MAH: in and linux kept running! Below is the detailed version, along
MAH: with a copy of the Linux error messages from /var/log/syslog.

I use this method for transporting data between linux systems. I simply
unmount all partitions of the hard drive. Then I run hdparm -Y to turn
the disk off (this usually prevents it from generating interrupts). And
finally I use ide_unregister function to remove ide driver that manages
the drives on the cable. I do not have any other device on the same
cable, so this does not hurt. Then I simply remove the harddrive. Of
course my disk is in a removable box so that it can be removed easily.

Inserting the drive is a reverse process. I found out that it is good to
check the result of hdparm -i after inserting the new drive. Sometimes
it needs to be reinserted.

Before I started to use hdparm -Y the keyboard sometimes froze. However
now I remove and insert the drive every day in a month without any
problem. I belive this is the fastest removable drive you can get, and
since I got 2 boxes for $30, and HD for $100 it may be also the
cheapest one.
