SOS! Crash on boot (bash 2.02 problems with 2.1.103?)

For some reason, my system seems to be getting seriously fouled up in the
init scripts and won't boot. Bash is producing errors (the kind that say
"BUG! email bash-maintainer@gnu.org immediatly!" or something to that
effect), causing the system to not get fsck'ed (line 25 of rc.S) (well, I
suppose one could say now the system IS fsck'ed :/ and in fact crash
halfway through boot.

Kernel is clean 2.1.103, compiled with gcc 2.7.2.3. I'm *trying* to run
with SMP, so I have dual p200's (also it's clocking them at 79.67 BogoMIPS
and reporting them as "Pentium 75+", is that normal for non-mmx
200mhz pentiums?)

(at which point the system stopped doing anything and I hit the otherwise
rarely-used reset button)

Actually, I just realized: this log is from a couple hours ago. When I
tried to boot 103 SMP about fifteen minutes ago, *nothing* got logged. So
right now I am stuck here with 2.0.33 using only one processor, the other
being a very expensive heat sink :(

I don't know what other information I can supply (kernel configuration is
pretty generic) so tell me what y'all need to know to help me figure this
out.
