When I did "modprobe aha1542" under Linux 2.1.103 on my PC, it locked up:
flogging the keyboard had no effect and gpm (X was not running) stopped
responding. Doing the same under 2.1.102 was successful:

Under 2.1.102, I was able to do "mount -t ufs -o ro /dev/sda /mnt" and
read the files from the drive. I got an error while doing "strings `find
etc -type f`":

ufs_read_inode: zero gen ino 50066 pblk 215202 dev 8/0

but maybe that was because the NeXT hadn't been shut down properly. I was
able to read the contents of the disk to an image file with no problems
under 2.1.102.

My hardware: Amptron PM7400 motherboard
(http://users.deltanet.com/users/amptron/7400-1.html), stepping 12 Pentium
"classic", two IDE hard drives using PIO (because of a problem I reported
earlier), Adaptec AHA542CF with the DIP switches set to
up-down-up-up-down-down-down-up (BIOS enabled, IRQ 10, 0x334), with the
Maxtor drive on one end of the bus (at boot time, I got a message similar
to "start unit command failed") and Sony CDROM drive with no power at the
other end, uninitialized Creative Labs Sound Blaster 32 PnP, Cirrus Logic
ISA video card, floppy, serial mouse, keyboard, Realtek 8029 Ethernet card
at 0x6000 and IRQ 11.

My configuration files are available at
http://jpj.net/~trevor/linux/config-2.1.102-topside and
http://jpj.net/~trevor/linux/config-2.1.103-topside .
