I had this problem too. I just erase my ncurses (which I think was
really mixed from many upgrades), and installed the ncurses-1.9.9e.tar.gz
from the gnu directory which is on my slackware cd. I couldn't find it on
the gnu archive. :(
And now it's ok with "menuconfig".

No, my p100 runs "menuconfig" in seconds. Go for 2.1.103 (but look at
ncurses :))
