segmentation faults with 2.1.101

I'm updating several system utilities at once, but have a hard time
doing so when several programs won't run at all, eg.:

[root@larve binutils-2.9.1.0.4]# strace ar
execve("/usr/local/bin/ar", ["ar"], [/* 17 vars */]) = 0
mmap(0, 4096, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) =
0x40007000

Any hint on where to fix this would be most welcome.

using libc.5.4.44, gcc v2.7.2.3, kernel compiled with gcc v2.7.2.1..
