Getting there slowly

Hello:

Finally was able to get the system back online last night. Turned out
that the default Red Hat script was calling dhcpcd with the "-c" option,
which is no longer valid in the newer 1.36 version of dhcpcd. On to the
next thing.

I downloaded and installed net-tools-1.45.tar.gz. Now, when I do an
'ifconfig', I get:

No usable address families found.
socket: Success

instead of my usual display showing me what devices are up. My connection
is there. I'm able to telnet, ftp, ping, etc. and I'm receiving mail.
Anyone run into this particular problem and what did you have to do to fix
it? I'm running RH 5.0 and kernel 2.1.103.
