How do I compile a non-SMP kernel?

I am having trouble compiling a non-SMP kernel. I am presently running
2.1.102..(103 wouldn't boot).
I compiled an SMP kernel (SMP=1 in Makefile). If I comment out SMP=1
then the kernel won't compile because of references to SMP.

I beleive the SMP kernel is crashing JAVA in Netscape as my non-smp
kernel does not have this problem.
