2.1.102 nfs client trouble

mounting / via nfsroot works fine, mounting /var from local hard disk also
works fine, but mouting /var from a nfs server gives rpc errors.
the server is the same, and the configuration works well with 2.0.34pre{10,15}
client kernels.
