input device freeze in 2.1.95 -> 2.1.102

as far as i can tell, these are the only kernels where i have this
problem.
details: i close XFree with ctrl-alt-backspace, and just when the server
normally flips back to a text console, my keyboard and mouse are frozen.
the system is still ok though. for some reason, sometimes it doesn't do
this. it seems to be completely random.

system: p166 with kernels 2.1.95 through 2.1.102, xfree86 3.3.2 running
SVGA server on a 2mb mystique 170. my kernels are compiled with
egcs-1.0.3prerelease at -O2 -mpentium.
