'head' the top of the patch file. Use a symlink to make "your" setup
exactly like "their" setup.

I have been patching stuff from many people for a long time. Often I
get a "diff" made from the directory containing the file, against
an original in some obscure, "safe" place.

Just temporarily make your setup just like theirs and then use -p0.
Remove the links after so they don't accumulate into a mess.
