ide-scsi in 2.1.98

I haven't seen a problem report on this, but when I load the ide-scsi
module some "interesting" things happen to my system:

1) The first time I was in X, and did a "modprobe ide-scsi" and the system
died about 5 seconds laster after the mouse spazzed out -- it looked like
someone had taken control of my mouse entirely, moving and clicking all
over the place.

2) The second time I was on the console, and did a "modprobe ide-scsi" and
it detected my CDROM on what appeared to be all SCSI ID's, and the CD-RW
on just one ID, and the hard locked -- no SysReq or Numlock at all.

3) The third time I pre-loaded scsi_mod and then ide-scsi by hand (kmod
bug perhaps -- I'm just using the stock kmod from 2.1.98). This worked,
but the strangeness of detection in #2 was still there:

scsi0 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices
scsi : 1 host.
Vendor: I Model: DE CD-ROM TW120D Rev: 2.00
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02
[7 copies of the above 2 lines and the the CD-RW looking normal]
scsi0 : channel 0 target 1 lun 1 request sense failed, performing reset.
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0.

The CD-ROM in question is marked as a 12X CYBER.

4) When I fired up xcdroast it segfaulted and hard locked the computer.

5) cdrecord hard locked when I ran "cdrecord dev=1,0 -dummy
/mnt/d/image1.raw". The first time I had an already-cut cd in there and
it errored out correctly and continued running, the second time it locked.
