Linux 2.1.99 prepatch 3 -- Sound problems revisited (SB16)

This kernel seems a tad faster. The first time I booted it cat
/usr/lib/games/xboing/sounds/*.au > /dev/audio (or dsp) worked fine.
Any time there after the Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config
error? happened. It seems to happen less often with this version
though.

I know my sound card is initializing right because it did play fine one
time through about 45 seconds of sound. Is it possible the interrupts
are intermittently not being turned back on (unmasked?)? Or some other
similar problem?

Pentium 133 Mhz 72 Meg of RAM two WD 3.2 gig drivers 24x GoldStar
Cheap-SCSI card that came with the Ricoh Internal CD-RW and the CD-RW
itself and an original none vibra SB16-ASP (this card is PnP but uses
its own standard I think as it predates PCI etc).
