I have the inverse problem: i am invisible:
18:57:15 yoda:~$ w
7:00pm up 23:59, 0 users, load average: 0.00, 0.02, 0.00
USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
19:00:07 yoda:~$

Perhaps someone has broken into your box, and replaced the w command
with something that filters out root?

Check your binaries...
