2.1.98 lock-up Non-SMP

I tried 2.1.98 and it locked up within 10 minutes. Slow death...sendmail
stopped, then telnet session. Alt-SysRq showed cpu_idle running, could NOT
emergency un-mount disks, could ping, could NOT login from console. Also
noticed new "PCI: Device 00:xx not found by BIOS" messages. Back to 2.1.95
on this machine (every one since has locked up)
