Night of the living dead

I went to bed last night and woke up with 88 zombie processes with 2.1.97.
I upgraded to 2.1.98 but the problem is still there. My system is
basically a Debian 1.3 system with a few minor modifications.

Right now, I have a zombie klogd, in.tftpd, 4 runq and a bash. klogd is
version 1.3-3, in.tftpd appears to be version 8.1 (from a strings of
the binary), runq is part of smail which is vresion 3.2 and bash is
2.00.0(1). I have a sun3 tftp-booting from this box and it's running
rc5des but otherwise it's not doing anything. Now I have 6 runq zombied.
I'm reasonably sure that the zombied bash was being run remotely from the
sun3 - network seems to be the common theme here? If I kill any of the
system daemons, they go zombie - gpm, lpd, pcnfsd. init is version 2.71.
Does this help?

Kernel built with gcc 2.7.2.1, binutils 970202.
