2.1.97 network woes

My networking just took itself down for no reason.
ifconfig eth0 down ; ifconfig eth0 up was enough to bring it back up.
There was a large ftp, a few ssh connections and a lot of irc connections
going on at the time.
Any ideas what's up here?
