2.1.97 boot fails like 96 on Intel Alder/DELL 6100

2.1.97 boot freeses after uncompress... Boot OK... line
just like 2.1.96 did on Alder-type 4x Pentium PRO systems
(a.k.a. IBM and DELL PPRO servers).

If anyone knows how to fix this and needs more information,
please contact me.
