It appears that I severely bollixed find_first_zero_bit (which is used
heavily by ext2fs) because mounting my root file system with a patched
kernel gave a remarkable number of errors and I killed the system
before it could puke all over the disk.

Anyway, I'll fix it and get something better-tested out.
But I thought I should warn folks because it'll be a few hours
before I get around to it.
