The new kernel boots totally without errors but I still have one
small problem. No way, no how, does the sound work (properly). I've
tried compiling the sound into the kernel--I hear a pop, the bootup
sequence intitializes the card and all the proper messages come up.
If I compile as modules and follow the various "insmod" procedures
and such I can't get any sound at all.
When compiled into the kernel I get the following msgs from the
following programs:
Xanim--no messages--plays perfectly-(music video from CD)
Quake2--"Um, Can't do GETOSPACE?" -- "/dev/dsp: Bad file number" and
"could not reset /dev/dsp"
Play--/usr/bin/play: /dev/audio: Device or resource busy
Cat--no messages--works
Xplaycd--works
A rather strange thing just happened, I was recompiling kernels to
make sure I had my story straight when I lost ALL sound. I had to boot
to 2.0.33 (where there was also no sound) and run Quake2 (I suppose) to
reset the /dev/dsp device. Upon rebooting to 2.1.97 everything was
normal again. (normal for 2.1.97)
I've compiled close to 30 kernels with every config possible
including, shutting off pnp, shutting off the parport configs, manually
shutting off CONFIG_PARIDE_PARPORT in a text editor immediately before
doing "make dep", etc....*sigh* I really don't want to go back to using
2.0.33, you guys have done such a good job on the 2.1.xx series 2.0.xx
seem kinda klunky now. Any chance of fixing the sound in 2.1.98? It's
been broken for such a long time...Thank you.
