Granted, the name they chose is really stupid, but the ECU already exists,
and has a different definition (it's an average of the currencies used by
*all* member states' currencies, including the UK pound and the drachma).
It was even considered for sometime to keep the ECU after Stage 3 begins,
just with it having the weight of the 11 "legacy currencies" -- until the
day the euro swallows the ECU. Finally, they chose to convert all amounts
on 'old' contracts referring to the ECU to amounts in euro, with 1 ECU ==
1 EUR (which is not exactly true), in effect zapping away the ECU.

However, it is perfectly acceptable in 7-bit environments to write
"EUR 1.00" (but please, please, check the current locale for the decimal
separator and currency placement <grin />)
