Loopback death

Upon running 2.1.96 on my SMP machine with two Dual Pentium Pro 200 256k CPU's
and 64M ram. The kernel was compiled with SMP and appears to function
correctly, but when I try to mount images with loopback it locks up all running
processes. The magic SysRq key still works, but everything else is locked.

I'm puzzled by this. Perhaps someone could comment.
