UltraDMA trouble

Hi,

(I am posting this here because I have a strong hunch this problem is
kernel-related.)

I am having problems in getting an IBM DHEA 38451 harddisk to work.
(The 38451 is an IDE UltraDMA disk with a capacity of 8.4 GB).

I am using an ASUS SP97-V mainboard. This mainboard uses an SiS 5598
chipset.

I have tried the following:

- Kernel versions 2.1.95/96 and 2.0.33

- Creating partitions < 2 GB

- Disabling UltraDMA in the mainboard's BIOS

- Changing the cable.

The worst behaviour was exhibited on the 2.1.x kernels when I used large
partitions. When I tried to copy large amounts of data to the disk,
after a while either the kernel oopsed or the "cp" process segfaulted or
hung.

Using 2.0.33, small partitions and disabling UltraDMA, I almost got it
to work. I was able to copy any amount of data to the disk with no
hickups, but most of the large files I checked have read errors.

I _have_ read the UltraDMA mini-HOWTO and it does not cover the SiS 5598
chipset.

How can I get this harddisk to work?

Thanks for any help!

Regards,
Daniel
