Strange, but seems to work for me. I have sound as module in 2.1.96
with these settings:
CONFIG_SOUND=m
CONFIG_SB=m
CONFIG_ADLIB=m
# CONFIG_MPU401 is not set
CONFIG_YM3812=m
and nothing more. Both sound and midi do work.
