Squid [proxy server] problems with 2.1.X that don't exist with 2.0.X

Hi,

I recently upgraded my proxy server from 2.0.33 to 2.1.89. This created
the following problems for every client connecting to it, be it Netscape,
MSIE or Lynx:

- If a Web Site is not responding instantly, there will be no reaction
until you click its link or enter its name again.

- If this also fails, I get the message "Your browser sent a message
this server could not understand" regardless of what browser I am using
or what software the server is running (so I suspect it is generated
by squid).

I've been having these problems before with older 2.1.X kernels before I
changed the proxy server to 2.0.X, but I did not realize they were caused
by using a different kernel. They were gone with 2.0.X and came back
immediately when I switched back to 2.1.X.

The proxy server software is squid 1.1.20. I recompiled it under 2.1.89,
but to no avail. I am using libc-5.4.38.

What could be wrong?
