It would allow hardware vendors to supply pre-compiled modules
for end-users. As it stands now any third party driver not included
in a distribution cannot be used without installing and compiling the
source code for the driver and the kernel. Not something any
non-technical user wants to do just to use a new piece of hardware and
believe me no sane support department is going to want to deal with
this. The end result is hardware vendors will (and do) avoid the Linux
issue.
