[2.1.90-pre3] Hard Lockup and data loss

Hi, while I was installing a whole bunch of debian updates (basically
gzip and tar) 2.1.90-pre3 locked SOLID. X was completely stuck... I
couldn't even get a SAK to do anything, and nothing showed up in the
system logs. The only thing that looks remotely related is that an hour
earlier, diald (which "uses obsolete (AF_INET,SOCK_PACKET) ") died on
an error.
As far as data los... basically since I had to do a hard reboot, no
sync() was done when necessary. Thats all, but I didn't get to learn
all about e2fsck!

egcs 980308

I don't think egcs is causing my problem, but has anyone else noticed a
problem with 2.1.90 and egcs?
