[2.1.88] ppp deficiencies (compression)

Greetings,

I've noticed a few problems with 2.1.88 and PPP. They are issues
that I've seen in the past, and appear to come and go with kernel versions
(as odd as that may sound). Problem one is that ppp_deflate and
bsd_comp modules don't stay loaded very long. When the PPP conneciton
first goes up, both modules are registered and working. This lasts for
anywhere between a few hours and a day. Ultimately, I get a "ppp: fatal
decomp error" in my kernel logs and the modules are dropped, never loaded
again until I drop and re-establish my connection. This is unforunate for
hosts connected via a dedicated line.
The second problem is a little more annoying. It is that networked
workstations trying to get out to the Internet through masquerading (done
on the system with the PPP connection) are not able to connect to certain
sites. The problem goes away if I adjust the MTU on the remote system
(that I'm dialed into) to 1500. Perhaps a path MTU discovery problem?

I'm using RedHat 5.0, ppp-2.3.3 and USR 33.6's on each side.

thanks,
-bp
