NOTE!! XFree3.3.1 has a bug probing the Matrox card which often hangs the
entire PCI bus upon "startx". I would suspect since you were starting X at
the time of the hang this might be to blame, instead of the kernel.
Allegedly fixed in 3.3.2, which appears to be out. Although it is still
far from stable on our LX164 Alpha's :( At least the problems now don't
kill the entire machine...
