+ latest 3c59x driver (if you're using that card).

See
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html
In brief, replace /usr/src/linux/drivers/net/3c59x.c with
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/3c59x.c

My personal workstation is running 2.0.32; its uptime of 72 days was
spoiled by:
Mar 4 15:19:46 lesser-magoo kernel: eth0: Transmit error, Tx status register 90.
Mar 4 15:22:53 lesser-magoo kernel: eth0: transmit timed out, tx_status 00 status e000.
Mar 4 15:23:16 lesser-magoo last message repeated 5 times
Mar 4 15:24:00 lesser-magoo last message repeated 11 times
Mar 4 15:24:01 lesser-magoo kernel: eth0: Host error, FIFO diagnostic register 0400.
Mar 4 15:24:48 lesser-magoo kernel: eth0: Transmit error, Tx status register 90.

This was using 3c59x.c version 0.46C. The latest is 0.49. Linux
2.1.88 contains version 0.47H.
