However, it _is_ possible. You operate one direction in 8-bit mode, and the
other in 16-bit mode.

Andrea Arcangeli posted a preliminary patch to do full duplex on a SB16 at the
end of December last year, but I've heard nothing about it since then. His mail
to linux-sound@vger, with the patch attached, is archived at:
