Take a look at nbd (network block device) in cvs tree.

I think that you _are_ talking about solution at filesystem
layer. Block device does not know what is free and what is not.

What about running nbd over all machines, mount it on single server,
and re-distribute using NFS? (Well, it will not be too fast :-( ).
